Transforming Your Health with an Alkaline Foods Diet

Transforming Your Health with an Alkaline Foods Diet

The food that we eat these days differs enormously from that of what our ancestors ate. Even if you go back as little as 100 years, our predecessors ate mainly freshly prepared whole foods; this at a time where refrigeration was a luxury.

As home refrigeration and other technology became more available, the types of foods that people ate changed significantly. If somebody from 1850 could travel forwards in time to a modern grocery store, they would be shocked at the amount of processed foods and animal products in the aisles. These days, we as consumers have no problem in finding fast food on nearly every street corner.

Our new way of eating involves a very high protein diet consisting of increased consumption of meat. Many fad diets are to blame for this, as they often promote the consumption of foods which are high in protein. This has come at the expense of people eating less fruit and vegetables.

When we consider this huge change in the types of food we now consume, it is no wonder then that the number of people reporting allergies, heart problems and bone disease has sky-rocketed. Many health experts cite a direct correlation between these diseases and the food we eat.

Experts say that certain types of food can disrupt the normal functions within the body which can lead to illness, allergies and disease. If we could change our eating habits so that a natural balance is achieved in our nutrition, then we can prevent disease and achieve a healthy strong body.

The Importance of Alkaline

In order for our bodies to function effectively, we need to maintain a healthy and steady alkaline to acid ratio, which is signified by the pH level of our body.

The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, with the middle 7 representing a ‘neutral’ PH. Anything lower than 7 is considered acidic, whilst anything above 7 is considered alkaline.

Processed food such as processed meat products, some beverages and condiments and candy generally produce excessive amounts of acidity in the body.

Abnormally high acidity level in the blood and other tissues of the body is known as Acidosis. Many health experts believe that acidosis is responsible for a range of serious diseases.

Alkaline occurs naturally in the body and acts to neutralize excess acidity. However, alkaline can also become depleted at times when there is too much acid to dispose of, and the problem can be exacerbated when we do not consume the right foods to replenish the alkaline.

Maintaining a Healthy pH Level

As we have seen, experts agree that acidosis can result in many health-related problems.  To prevent dangerous levels of acid circulating in our body and damaging tissues and organs, we must understand that our body needs a healthy pH balance – offsetting any excessive amounts of acid by increasing your body’s alkalinity.

Determining whether or not your pH levels are prevalently alkaline may be done with easy-to-use pH level strips which you can purchase in drug stores or medical supplies stores. Some pH level strips are designed for testing your saliva, whilst others will test your urine.

A saliva pH level strip will determine how much acid your body is producing. A normal Acidity level would be between 6.5 and 7.5 throughout the day.

A urine pH level strip will tell how well you excrete excess amounts of acid; you should get between 6.0 and 6.5 in the morning and between 6.5 and 7.0 at night.

Excessive Acid - The Dangers

If you have high levels of acid in your body, you may suffer from the following:

  • Exhaustion
  • Headaches
  • frequent colds and flu
  • Depression
  • Hyperacidity
  • Ulcers
  • skin dryness
  • acne
  • obesity

Then there are those that are more serious such as joint diseases, osteoporosis, bronchitis, frequent infections and heart diseases.

Even if you begin to take medications for these illnesses, the symptoms may be masked, but they will still continue to affect your health as you are not attacking them from their roots. Regardless of what medications you take for these symptoms, your body will only become more acidic.

Alkaline Foods - The Alkaline Diet Approach

In order to get to the root cause of these health problems, your body’s pH level must be brought back to normal. There are alkaline foods that can help replenish the depleted alkaline levels in the body, while neutralizing excess amounts of acid. An alkaline diet can ensure sufficient amounts of alkaline are re-introduced into the body, thus bringing back the pH level to predominantly alkaline.

How do you incorporate alkaline foods into your eating regime?

You can start by cutting down your intake of processed foods. These type of foods contain chemicals that only increase the acidity of your body.

Also, stay well away from alcohol, meat and meat products; and dairy. Lastly, fill-up on alkaline foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables since all these have a naturally high level of alkaline.

What about Citrus?

Even acidic fruits like oranges and lemons become alkaline after they have been digested and absorbed by the body. As a general rule, 75% of your daily food consumption should consist of alkalizing foods.

The more alkaline foods we provide our bodies with, the more efficient the neutralization of excess acids will be.
